LAN: A local area network, or LAN, is a computer network covering a local area, like your home, office or small group of buildings such as a school.

Latency: This is the time interval between when a network station seeks access to a transmission channel and when access is granted or received. In reference to a bridge or router, latency is the amount of time elapsed between receiving and retransmitting the LAN packet.

LDAP: Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, is an open-standard protocol used for accessing information services. This protocol runs over Internet transport protocols like TCP and can be used to access stand-alone directory servers or X.500 directories.

List Box A list box is a GUI widget, typically found in web pages, that allows a user to select one or more items from a list contained within a multiple line text box.

LMHOSTS: A text-based file (located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc) used to locate remote computers for network file, printer, and remote access services. This file comes in handy for name resolution if there are no DNS/WINS servers on the network.

Load Balancing: Refers to the ability to be able to redistribute load (such as web page requests) to an alternate path between servers or storage devices. Load balancing is a great option for people with high end websites with many visitors. Load balancing also allows you the option to remove one server from the team (for hardware or software maintenance) without taking down the entire site.

Localhost: An alias for the IP address 127.0.0.1, an address that always indicates the local computer. This is the address a computer uses to refer to itself.

Loopback: A networking diagnostic test that returns the transmitted signal back to the sending device after it has passed through a network or possibly across a particular link.
